A Day in the Life: Our Very Austin, Very Green Neighborhood

What do Austinites care more about than even trees, green technology, and eco-chic goods? OBAMA! Every afternoon Samuel and I go for a walk in our neighborhood. Today, I saw no fewer than fifteen (15) "Texans for Obama" or "Obama/Biden" signs and this:

That's right. These people spray-painted their old, beautiful tree and wrote "OBAMA 08" down its trunk. (I especially appreciate the inclusion of "08," as if people might forget they needed to vote this year...) What you can't see in the picture are the handful of little American flags placed at random around the front yard. Oh, and in case one misses the giant made-up tree, there is also this sign nailed to another tree:

To be fair to our neighbors, not everyone has an Obama sign. There are many people (like us) who have no signs and one lone, old, white couple who choose to display a (very rare...probably imported from Houston) "McCain/ Palin" sign.

We love our neighborhood. There are so many neat little houses, lovely trees, friendly neighbors, etc. The original homes were mostly built in the 1940s and 50s. Here's a home where people added on to the original 1000 sq. foot house...but kept an automobile, apparently, as a reminder of the good 'ole days:

And this house, affectionately dubbed "The Tin Can." It's an ultra-modern remodel where the middle part of the home is its only tie to earlier times. It also could double as a small modern art museum, don't you think?
